TikTok Implements Policies to Ensure Authenticity and Prohibit Political Advertising

TikTok is an entertainment platform that aims to bring people together and create a positive environment. To achieve this, they have implemented various policies:

  • Verification Process: TikTok is introducing a verification process to ensure the authenticity of government, politician, and political party accounts. This will let the community know that the content they are watching is genuine and comes from a trusted source. While verification is currently optional, mandatory verification will be trialed for these accounts during the midterm elections in the US.

  • Prohibition of Political Advertising: TikTok has prohibited political advertising on the platform. This includes both paid ads and creators being paid to promote branded content. These restrictions are now extended to the account level, meaning politicians and political parties will no longer have access to advertising features. However, government organizations will be allowed to advertise for public health and safety campaigns, such as COVID-19 booster campaigns, but they must work with a TikTok representative.

  • Monetization Restrictions: TikTok is prohibiting government, politician, and political party accounts from accessing monetization features such as gifting, tipping, e-commerce, and the Creator Fund. This means that they will not be able to give or receive money through TikTok's monetization features or spend money promoting their content.

  • Disallowed Solicitation for Campaign Fundraising: TikTok is updating its policies to disallow solicitation for campaign fundraising. This includes content such as politicians asking for donations or political parties directing people to donation pages on their websites.

By implementing these changes, TikTok aims to strike a balance between allowing discussions on relevant issues while preserving the integrity of the platform.
