TikTok Truths: Accurate Information about Data Collection and Usage

Today, we are introducing a new series called TikTok Truths, which aims to provide accurate information about the data we collect and how we use, share, and protect it. In this post, we will address some common claims and clarify our practices.

Information Collection

Firstly, it is important to note that the amount of information collected by the TikTok app is not unique. Like other apps, we collect information that users choose to provide and information that helps the app function securely and improve user experience.

Location Services

In certain regions such as the United States, Australia, and South Korea, the current versions of the TikTok app do not collect precise or approximate GPS information from users. However, in regions where users grant permission for TikTok to use their device's Location Services, we collect location information based on the device's GPS data. This information is used to enhance the app experience, show users popular content in their area, and provide relevant ads. More details about location information collection and how to manage Location Services can be found in our Privacy Policy.

Keystrokes

Regarding keystrokes, TikTok collects certain patterns or rhythms for security and performance purposes. This helps us verify the authenticity of an account, control risks, debug and troubleshoot issues, and monitor performance. It is important to note that prior to September 2022, TikTok did not track specific keys or buttons pressed on third-party websites, but only registered the occurrence of a key or click event. Starting from September 2022, no key events or click events are logged except when using the in-app browser to view a TikTok-owned website.

Face and Voice Data

We want to clarify that TikTok does not use face or voice data to uniquely identify individuals. Face and voice information is collected and used for filters, effects, safety measures, user experience enhancement, content recommendation and moderation, and demographic classification. Filters and effects often require analysis of facial or voice data to function properly. Additionally, TikTok uses this information to analyze videos, photos, and live streams uploaded by users to ensure they are safe and appropriate for the TikTok community. More information about this can be found in our Privacy Policy.

Camera and Microphone Access

When it comes to camera and microphone access, TikTok asks for permission to allow users to create and upload videos and photos. The camera and microphone are only activated when users grant TikTok permission to access them. No information is collected from these sources when the TikTok app is closed.

Privacy and Security

At TikTok, privacy and security are of utmost importance. We are committed to safeguarding the privacy and security of our users and dedicate significant resources to achieve this goal. We will continue to provide updates on our privacy and security practices through our newsroom, help center, and privacy policies.
