[UPDATE] How to Set Up TikTok Pixels (Using Tag Manager)
Welcome back to another Workshop Wednesday! This week’s edition is a Beyond Basics edition, where we delve into setting up TikTok pixels using Google Tag Manager.
Welcome
Hi, everyone! My name is Chris Mercer, but you can call me Mercer. I’m one of the instructors here at measurementmarketing.io. Whether you found us through our podcasts, talks, platforms, or measurements marketing.io, we’re thrilled you’re here.
Introduction to Measurement Marketing
Our goal is to help you get the most from your marketing efforts. Today, we’re diving into how to set up TikTok pixels using Google Tag Manager.
Measurement Marketing Framework
We operate using a specific framework: Plan, Build, and Launch.
- Plan: List your questions and collect the information needed for answers.
- Build: Ensure results and traffic are accurately measured.
- Launch: Listen, forecast, measure, and optimize based on results.
Setting Up TikTok Pixels with Google Tag Manager
Step 1: Navigate to the Events Manager
You might notice that finding the events manager isn’t straightforward. Navigate to Assets > Events to create your pixel.
Step 2: Create the Pixel
- Name your Pixel: Eg., Measurement Marketing TikTok Pixel.
- Choose Installation Method: You can choose to install the pixel code manually or use partner platforms. It’s recommended to use the manual method for better control.
Proceed with Manual Setup
- Go to Google Tag Manager: Add the TikTok pixel template.
- Fill in Pixel ID: You’ll find this ID in your events manager.
- Set Trigger Events: Choose the event, such as View Content or Completed Payment.
- Add Parameters: Even though TikTok documents list these as "recommended," treat them as required to avoid errors.
Pro Tips
- Tag Sequencing: Ensure the tag fires after other necessary tags to avoid conflicts.
- Review Documentation: TikTok offers extensive documentation to help guide each step.
- Testing: Use TikTok’s tools to ensure everything functions correctly.
Using Google Tag Manager Efficiently
- Add Event Parameters: Ensure all necessary information is passed when an event fires.
- Testing and Debugging: Test your implementation using the TikTok Pixel Helper and Google Tag Manager preview mode.
Avoid Automatic Partner Tool
If you connect TikTok to Google Tag Manager using the partner tool, be aware it might publish changes immediately without explicit consent.
Verifying Your Setup
As TikTok can take up to 24 hours to reflect data, plan and test in advance to ensure everything functions as intended.
