Pixel 8 Pro Milky Way Camera Test: Road Trip to Nevada Desert

Introduction

Astrophotography enthusiasts know that capturing the perfect night sky image requires precise planning and ideal conditions. In this second part of my astrophotography series, I embarked on a journey to Garlock, one of the darkest spots in Northern Nevada according to light pollution maps. The terrain here is absolutely stunning, featuring vast mountains and endless flat roads that stretch into the horizon, offering the perfect backdrop for night photography.

Timing plays a crucial role when it comes to astrophotography. Armed with my trusty Pixel 8 Pro, I adhered to my preparation checklist before heading out: tripod? Check. Warm clothes? Check. Clear skies with minimal cloud cover? Check. And, as it happens, we are out on December 30, 2024, under a black moon. This phenomenon, similar to a new moon, occurs when the moon is invisible in the night sky, allowing stars to shine brighter and creating exceptional conditions for stargazing and astrophotography.

Upon arriving in Garlock, however, the weather posed a challenge as clouds began to roll in. Undeterred, we decided to turn the car around in search of a clearer patch of sky, all while keeping our eyes peeled for striking rock formations that could enhance our shots. We eventually found the perfect spot and parked, eagerly waiting for the sun to set.

Once the skies darkened, I mounted the Pixel 8 Pro on my tripod and began capturing various areas of the sky. The results were spectacular, so I'd love to hear your thoughts about the shots in the comments section below.

A quick tip for fellow photographers: be sure to shoot in RAW format and edit your photos later to bring out all the details in your shots. Popular editing software includes Affinity Photo 2, Skylo, Luminar Neo, and my personal go-to, Lightroom.

As we packed up after a rewarding night, the stars were incredibly bright, and we had the thrill of witnessing meteors streak across the sky. This experience was more than just capturing images; it was about savoring every moment underneath the vast cosmos.

In my next video, I'll take a pause to address some of the questions I've received from you all. If you enjoyed this article, please like and subscribe to stay updated on what's coming next. Thank you for joining me on this journey, and I look forward to seeing you in the next installment!
