Introducing an Updated Account Enforcement System on TikTok

TikTok is implementing an updated system for account enforcement to target repeat offenders and ensure a safe and positive environment for its creators. The new system aims to efficiently remove harmful accounts while providing a consistent experience for the majority of creators who abide by the platform's policies.

The current account enforcement system includes temporary bans and feature restrictions to prevent abuse and educate users about the policies. However, feedback from creators highlighted the confusion and potential disproportionate impact on unintentional policy violations. Analysis showed that repeat violators consistently use the same feature and repeatedly violate the same policy category. To address these concerns, TikTok is updating the account enforcement system.

Under the new system, accounts will receive a strike and have content removed if it violates the Community Guidelines. Accumulating a certain number of strikes within a specific feature or policy category will result in a permanent ban. The thresholds for strikes may vary based on the potential harm caused. Severe violations, such as promoting violence or child sexual abuse material, will lead to an immediate permanent ban. Accounts with a high number of cumulative strikes across policies and features will also be permanently banned. Strikes will expire from an account's record after 90 days.

To enhance transparency and help creators understand their account status, TikTok will introduce new features in the Safety Center within the app. Creators will have access to an "Account status" page to view their account standing and a "Report records" page to track the status of their reports on other content or accounts. These tools, along with existing notifications for policy violations, will support creators in appealing enforcements and having strikes removed if valid. TikTok will also notify creators if their account is at risk of being permanently removed.

In addition to these changes, TikTok is testing a feature in some markets that provides creators with information about which of their videos have been marked as ineligible for recommendation to the For You feed. This feature will explain the reasons behind the decision and offer creators the opportunity to appeal.

The updated account enforcement system is being rolled out globally, and TikTok will notify its community members as it becomes available to them. The platform is committed to continuously improving and sharing progress in evaluating accounts and ensuring accurate and fair enforcement decisions for all types of accounts.
