TikTok's Commitment to Diversity and Inclusion

Last summer, the Black Lives Matter movement sparked a powerful awakening across the country. TikTok played a significant role in amplifying the emotional voices, images, and stories of this movement, reminding us of our responsibility to our community. TikTok is committed to creating an inclusive platform that reflects our diverse world and has taken concrete actions to combat racism and discrimination.

The diversity of the TikTok community is what makes it a rewarding and inspiring place. To recognize and uplift the voices of creators, TikTok introduced the Creator Diversity Collective. This braintrust of talented creators from different backgrounds has helped shape programs that highlight and amplify diverse creators. TikTok has also launched community-favorite programs like Dinner with Me and Amplifying Diverse Voices, which showcase the diverse stories and experiences on the platform.

TikTok has been actively supporting Black creators and causes. They hosted the TikTok for Black Creatives creator accelerator program, providing educational events and forums for emerging Black creators and music artists to grow their careers. The TikTok Creator Portal serves as a resource hub for the flourishing Black creative community on TikTok. Additionally, TikTok has created @BlackTikTok, the official home of the #BlackTikTok community.

Supporting creators and local communities is a priority for TikTok. They have launched initiatives like the Support Black Businesses hub, which promotes partnerships and initiatives that support Black entrepreneurs. TikTok has also provided financial support to non-profit organizations fighting for racial equality and justice, as well as programs and resources for local Black communities. They have made contributions to Black museums and academic institutions, including historically Black colleges and universities (HBCUs), that focus on preserving Black stories and history and providing opportunities for underrepresented students in public health and healthcare fields.

TikTok has also introduced tools to empower the community. They have improved the notification system and appeals process to create transparency and understanding. Creators now have more control over comments on their content, with the ability to delete or report comments and block users in bulk. TikTok has also implemented filters for comments and prompts users to reconsider posting unkind comments to foster kindness on the platform. They have evolved their policies to address nuanced content like cultural appropriation and slurs, educating their enforcement teams to understand the context behind certain expressions.

To ensure the safety and inclusivity of the platform, TikTok works with a Content Advisory Council and invests in unconscious bias training for their moderation team. They are committed to ongoing education and support for underrepresented groups.

Internally, TikTok's employees are actively engaged in advancing diversity and inclusion efforts. They have hosted the TikTok Inclusion Summit and launched the BLXCK (Black X) Employee Resource Group to support the advancement of Black talent. TikTok also participates in programs like Talent x Opportunity (TxO) to support Black entrepreneurs.

TikTok recognizes the importance of providing a platform for people of all races, ethnicities, cultures, disabilities, genders, and identities to be seen and heard. They acknowledge that there is still work to be done and are committed to continually improving themselves as a platform, community, and organization.
