TikTok's Efforts to Address the Fentanyl Epidemic

TikTok is committed to creating a safe environment for its community members and raising awareness about the dangers of fentanyl. They understand the unique experiences and backgrounds of their users and strive to provide a supportive community where everyone feels comfortable.

Today is National Fentanyl Awareness Day, and TikTok is taking action to educate its community about the dangers of illicit drugs. They are working to remove drug-related content from their platform and partnering with experts to provide resources. TikTok also supports California Assembly Bill 1628, which aims to publicly disclose policies regarding the sale and distribution of illicit substances like fentanyl.

Supporting the well-being of the community is a top priority for TikTok. They have a strict stance against content that promotes drug use on their platform, but they allow individuals to share their personal experiences with addiction and recovery. Hashtags like #recovery and #addictionawareness serve as hubs for conversation, learning, and encouragement.

To prevent the spread of harmful content, TikTok utilizes a combination of technology and human review. They encourage their community to report any concerns they may have about another person on the platform. Last year, 95% of the content removed in the US was proactively addressed, and 90% of content removals were handled within 24 hours of posting.

TikTok is committed to partnering with organizations to care for their community. They collaborate with LegitScript and Song for Charlie to combat online drug sales and expand their support network. They have also donated to the Ad Council and Song for Charlie to aid their efforts in raising awareness about the dangers of fentanyl.

The CDC estimates that overdose deaths involving synthetic opioids, including fentanyl, increased by over 16% from 2018 to 2019. TikTok believes in the possibility of creating a world with fewer overdoses, more treatment and recoveries, and more compassion. They participate in National Fentanyl Awareness Day to support this cause.

"We are grateful to our friends at TikTok for their support of National Fentanyl Awareness Day and for helping us to alert our youth to the dangers of fentanyl in fake pills and street drugs. Through our partnership, we are reaching millions of young people on TikTok with this important, life-saving message." — Ed Ternan, Founder of Song for Charlie

"We're proud to partner with TikTok to proactively detect and prevent dangerous and illicit drugs from being sold on its platform. In our work making the internet safer across many high-risk areas, nothing is more important than protecting the public from potentially lethal opioids and other drugs being sold online. By partnering with LegitScript to monitor its platform, TikTok is demonstrating that it takes illicit drug sales seriously and that it cares about the well-being of its users." — Scott Roth, CEO of LegitScript
