TikTok Partners with ConnectSafely to Promote Online Safety for Teens

TikTok has partnered with ConnectSafely to survey US parents and better understand how they approach discussions about online safety with their teens. The survey results showed that parents recognize the importance of these conversations. However, the findings also revealed that parents may hesitate to proactively initiate these conversations.

The survey revealed three distinct digital parenting practices: Confident Caregivers, Aware Advocates, and Sideline Supporters. TikTok has launched several initiatives to empower parents to feel confident in having conversations about online safety. They have found that most parents believe it's important to spend time using the same online platforms as their teens to better understand their experiences.

TikTok has launched community events, in-app educational content, and a national and local TV campaign to raise awareness about their Family Pairing feature. Family Pairing allows parents to link their accounts with their teens' accounts and set privacy and safety controls. They are also visiting schools and conducting panels and breakout sessions to hear directly from teens and parents about their online experiences.

TikTok has implemented a tool that prompts teens to reflect on their screen time and encourages them to use their screen time management tools. They believe that partnering with parents is essential in promoting safe and responsible online experiences. They will continue to work with experts, such as ConnectSafely and National PTA, to build age-appropriate experiences that meet the unique needs of teens and families on TikTok.
