TikTok's Efforts to Combat Wildlife Trafficking Online

TikTok is collaborating with the Coalition to End Wildlife Trafficking Online to raise awareness and combat wildlife trafficking. They will introduce Public Service Announcements (PSAs) to inform users about the dangers of trading endangered species online. The focus is on sea turtles, as they are currently threatened with extinction. TikTok has clear Community Guidelines and Advertising Policies to prohibit the depiction or promotion of illegal wildlife trade. They have been successful in removing 73.5% of prohibited content before it receives any views since joining the Coalition in March 2021. Additionally, their Advertising Policies strictly prohibit the advertising of products derived from protected animals or the sale of animals themselves.

To protect sea turtles and other endangered animals, TikTok encourages social media users to report suspicious content, spread awareness, and learn about the dangers of posing with exotic or endangered animals. Prominent creators in the wildlife protection area, such as Marine Biologist @carissaandclimate and National Geographic's TV Vet Paul Ramos (@vetpaulramos), are actively raising awareness and advocating for wildlife protection on TikTok.

TikTok's efforts to combat wildlife trafficking online contribute to the preservation of our planet's biodiversity. By empowering users to report suspicious content, they aim to reduce wildlife trafficking across online platforms. Their commitment to this work ensures that TikTok remains a platform that brings joy, inspires creativity, and protects endangered animals.
