"LOW" SZA DANCE TUTORIAL
Introduction
Welcome back to my channel! My name is Samantha, and I am a choreographer, teacher, and dancer based in Los Angeles. Today, I’m excited to present a totally free tutorial of my choreography to "Low" by SZA. Joining me is my lovely assistant, Gigi Escobar, my right hand, go-to, and ride or die. You may have seen her in all of my class videos; she’s here to help guide you through this tutorial.
If you haven’t already, please subscribe to my channel. This is a free tutorial, and your support means the world to me. Also, remember to be kind to yourself throughout the learning process. We’re going to take it slow, and I've flipped the screen so that everything is mirrored—when I say my right, I mean your right.
I would love to see your recreations of this tutorial! If you post your videos on Instagram or TikTok, tag me or send me a DM; I would love to witness your shine!
Getting Started
We upgraded our space to Playground LA, my home studio, where I teach every Sunday at 3 PM for beginner-intermediate hip-hop classes and Wednesdays at 4 PM on Melrose Avenue near Fairfax.
Let’s jump right into the choreography! Starting with a hop, we’re going to jump up and say "me" all together. The counts are as follows:
- [1] Jump up
- [2] Take your right foot out and bring it back in
- [3] Lift your left heel up
- [4] Bring your chin up as you flatten into your foot
Your left hand should comfortably hold your pants throughout this movement.
Once you're comfortable, we move on:
- Step forward on your left foot, pulling yourself up.
- Turn around over your right shoulder and close your stance.
- Step out on your right foot while nodding your head.
Remember, you're welcome to rewind at any point if you need to!
Continuing the Choreography
After completing those movements, we’ll step to the left, then cross over to the right, pulling your arms safely across your chest. From there:
- [1] Reach the right foot out while bringing your arms down
- [2] Slide your foot back in as you do some "Shmoney" moves, whatever that inspires in you!
If you need to pause or replay any sections, remember this tutorial is here for you.
Next, we will do a “no, hold on” moment. You should feel empowered in your movements; think of it as a big, dramatic scoop. After that, we will lift our shoulders and create a big diagonal line with our arms.
Wrapping Up Movement
The final movement of this section involves a breakdown:
- Move left to right, breaking the arm and maintaining clean, sharp movements.
- Look over your left shoulder while stepping left-right.
- Finish by pushing forward then back, stepping it all the way down to the floor to close.
Don’t forget, your knees can close, or you can simply arch your back for this final pose.
Final Rehearsal
We will go through everything again, slowly, at first. Then, we’ll amp it up to medium speed and finally full tempo. This dance can be complex, but remember: if you feel overwhelmed, that’s okay! This choreography flows well after multiple attempts.
We will finish with a fun, energetic full tempo run-through of the choreography, followed by an exciting musical recap where you can dance freely!
Thank you so much for joining us in this "Low" dance tutorial! If you enjoyed the session, don’t forget to subscribe and tag both Gigi and me in your social media posts. I can’t wait to see your renditions, and I look forward to seeing you in the next tutorial!
