How to Make the Wowza Quilt - Free Project Tutorial
Introduction
Hello, everyone! I'm Natalie with Missouri Star Quilt Company, and today I'm excited to guide you through creating a fantastic quilt called the Wowza Quilt by Material Girlfriends. This project is easier than it appears, so let's dive right in!
Materials Needed
To complete the Wowza Quilt, you'll need the following materials:
- Fabric Pack: Two packets of 10-inch squares (one for prints and one for the background)
- Background Fabric: We recommend Essex linen for the background
- Print Fabric: We used the Kona Cotton Solids Spring Summer collection for our prints, but feel free to choose any print you prefer
- Borders:
- Inner Border: ½ yard
- Outer Border: 1 yard and ¼ yard (5-inch)
- Binding: ¾ yard
- Backing:
- Use a 108-inch width fabric (1⅔ yards) or regular yardage (3½ yards of 45-inch fabric)
We used the stunning Kaleidoscope Parade Multi backing by Annabelle Wrigley for Windham, which complements the front beautifully.
Step-by-Step Instructions
Fabric Preparation:
- For this quilt, you will use 24 light and 24 dark squares. Pair them up to create blocks. Each set of pairs will yield two blocks, contributing to the quilt's visual interest.
Cutting the Fabric:
- Stack your fabrics for efficiency and make a 3½-inch strip cut. Trim off any excess pink edges.
- Cut two more 3-inch squares and another strip measuring 5½ inches. Set aside your cuts.
Making Half Square Triangles:
- Flip your 3½-inch squares over and draw a line from corner to corner. Stitch a quarter inch away from both sides of the line to create half square triangles.
- Cut apart your stitched squares and square them to 3 inches. Use a block lock ruler for precision.
Block Assembly:
- Lay out your pieces, alternating the direction of the printed and background squares as you join them together.
- Once the individual blocks are assembled, they can be stitched into rows to form the quilt top.
Finishing Touches:
- With the blocks completed, choose a layout that appeals to you. The Wowza pattern offers various layouts over several pages, allowing for creativity.
- After arranging your blocks, sew them together and add the inner and outer borders.
- Finally, quilt your masterpiece and enjoy your new Wowza Quilt!
The final dimensions of the quilt are approximately 56 by 71 inches, making it perfect for a lap quilt or a toddler bed.
