How to Make a Mirrored Mountains Quilt - Free Quilting Tutorial
Introduction
Today, I’m excited to show you how to create the Mirrored Mountains Quilt, designed by Bonnie Sullivan. This quilt features a stunning design, perfect for the winter season, and is made using cozy flannel fabric. I chose to work with the Stormy Seas palette, which adds a beautiful touch to the finished quilt.
Materials Needed
Before we get started, here’s what you will need for this project:
- 10-inch squares of flannel: One pack (I used the Stormy Seas palette)
- Background fabric: 3 5/8 yards of black herringbone flannel
- Binding fabric: 5/8 yard of navy windowpane flannel
- Backing fabric: 4 yards of your choice of flannel
Cutting Your Fabrics
- Background Squares: Cut a 10-inch square of the background fabric to match each of your flannel prints. You will need a total of 42 squares.
- 3-inch Squares: Cut additional 3-inch squares from your background fabric.
Preparing the Blocks
- Pair each 10-inch flannel square with a 10-inch square of background flannel.
- Draw a line from corner to corner on the background fabric.
- Sew a ¼ inch away from the drawn line on both sides.
Chain Piecing
To save time, stack multiple pairs and chain piece them — sewing down one side and returning on the other.
- After sewing, cut the blocks apart along the drawn line and press the seams open, ideally to the dark side.
Squaring Up the Half Square Triangles
- Square the half square triangles to 9 inches using a 10-inch ruler.
- Make sure to align the seam on the 45-degree line of your ruler.
- Trim to ensure both sides are accurate, maintaining the integrity of the seam.
Cutting Strips for the Blocks
- With the two squared triangles, orient one with the bottom left and the other with the bottom right, ensuring the colors align in the middle.
- Cut 3-inch strips from each half square triangle.
Assembling the Blocks
- Flip the strips to form the Mirrored Mountains shape.
- Sew the three strips together for each block, pressing the seams flat after each addition.
- After assembling the two opposite blocks, sew 3-inch squares onto the sides accordingly for a snowballed look.
Final Assembly
- Match the middle seam when placing the two blocks together.
- Ensure alignment at the points and sew.
- Give the block a final press.
Once completed, suggest using the matching colors when laying out the quilt for a beautiful cohesive pattern.
This design is wonderfully simple and results in a stunning quilt that is perfect for cuddling up on chilly winter nights. Thank you, Bonnie Sullivan, for this fantastic pattern and tutorial!
