We're Taking Our Family Off Grid - Tour Our Setup

Introduction

Welcome to our new home, a 2016 Hideout trailer camper, model 32 BHTS! We’re excited to give you a complete tour of our setup so you can see what we’re working with in this off-grid lifestyle. This isn’t our first time living off the grid; we've been B-lifers since 2019, exploring the world in three different vehicles. Our family has grown, so we needed a different kind of rig to enjoy our travels more comfortably. While we figure out our next ideal travel rig, this Hideout is going to be our home base.

Exterior Features

Starting at the front of the trailer, we have a massive storage area that goes underneath the bed and extends to the opposite side, accessible through locking doors on both sides. For convenience, there’s an automatic trailer hitch lifter, dual propane tanks that automatically switch over, and an indicator that tells us when they're empty. We upgraded to a lithium-ion battery for better energy management, allowing us to draw all energy without worrying about damage.

Currently, we’ve been living out of this rig for three weeks, and the propane is still working strong. It powers our fridge, hot water heater, and cooktop, making life much easier. We also have a gravity fill for water, holding about 45 gallons of fresh water, and both gray and black water dump options to manage waste.

One of our helpful additions is a heavy-duty hay wagon for transporting groceries and water. We only bring our truck in when necessary to avoid damaging the lawn. We’ve also added an easy lift system that allows us to balance the trailer without extensive effort.

Regarding our waste management, we purchased a 36-gallon portable black tank for easier disposal of waste. And while we are off-grid, we plan to build a full solar array in the future to enhance our energy independence. For now, we have a generator we found for a steal on Facebook Marketplace, which powers our system for several hours a day while providing a convenient way to charge our lithium battery.

Living Space

We welcome you inside, where we’ve set up a baby gate to keep little Everly safe. We have our control panel upfront, which manages everything from the hot water heater to the lights and slides. The kitchen area was a huge selling feature for us; it has a pop-out design that gives us extra space for cooking and storage.

The double basin sink is perfect for doing dishes, and we have a spacious three-burner cooktop. Our fridge-freezer combo optimally runs on propane when off-grid, switching automatically to 120 volts when available.

Moving into the living area, we’ve set up a comfortable couch and a large dining table that doubles as a bed if needed. The natural light is abundant, making it a pleasant space to unwind or play games.

Family Space

Everly has her own room, which features blackout film for her daytime naps. This bedroom has a unique three-bunk layout, giving us the option to house more little ones if needed. For now, we’ve repurposed the upper bunk for toy and storage space. The room also features a vacuum system, allowing us to clean the entire trailer easily.

The main bathroom is a dry bath design with a full shower and toilet, while the primary bedroom has a generous amount of storage and comfort. We love our Hideout trailer as our new family home, and we hope you enjoyed touring our setup.
