TikTok was initially launched by a Chinese company in 2016 under a different name and was primarily an entertainment app for making short, 60-second videos. Within a short period, TikTok grew massively, reaching one billion monthly active users worldwide. Out of the two billion active internet users globally, one billion are actively using TikTok.

The Business Model

TikTok generates revenue similarly to Facebook and Google by leveraging user data. After gaining a massive user base, TikTok launched its e-commerce platform called TikTok Shop in Southeast Asia, which was then expanded to the UK.

Currently, TikTok has around 90 million monthly active users in the UK alone, out of which 30 million are highly active. By entering the TikTok Shop, businesses can tap into this huge market potential, selling their products to a massive audience.

Benefits of TikTok Shop

TikTok Shop has proven to be a lucrative platform, even outperforming Amazon for some sellers in terms of revenue within a short period. For instance, individual sellers have reported making sales worth millions of dollars just by leveraging TikTok’s organic reach and affiliate marketing features.

Comparison with Amazon

While Amazon has stringent policies that sometimes make it difficult for new sellers, TikTok Shop is more lenient, attracting former Amazon sellers. The combination of organic reach and the potential for viral content makes TikTok Shop an appealing alternative.
