TikTok's product research is relatively straightforward because it’s a newer platform still undergoing test and trials. Both brands and sellers are gradually adapting to it. It will take approximately 6-8 months to understand consumer behavior fully. However, we are currently operating on a test and trial basis.

When performing product research for TikTok Shop, keep in mind that TikTok is an entertainment app. The majority of its users aren't always buying out of necessity but often because something caught their eye. For instance, unlike Amazon, where users search for specific needs, TikTok shoppers often buy items they find appealing or trendy.

Categories that tend to perform well include:

  • Innovative Products: These grab attention because they solve a unique problem.
  • Fancy/Trending Items: Products that create a buzz.
  • Problem-Solving Products: Practical gadgets that offer real solutions.
  • Evergreen Products: Timeless items with consistent demand.
  • Seasonal Products: Items related to festivals or trends.

Product Research Methods

1. TikTok Shop Seller Central

Access the TikTok Shop Seller Central and navigate to the Data Compass (called Analytics in some regions). Inside the Data Compass, click on Market Analysis. This section displays top-selling products by category within your local region.

2. Creative Center on TikTok

Visit the TikTok Creative Center and explore products under the Top Products section. Select your region and category, then analyze the product popularity. Use trending hashtags and keywords here to help rank your product videos better.

3. Thieve.co

This tool helps you find trending products on Alibaba, which is an indicator of what might sell well. Once a product catches your eye, validate it by searching on the TikTok Shop and matching its price and sales volume.

4. Amazon Best Sellers

Amazon's best sellers can give you insights into consumer preferences because the same demographics likely overlap with TikTok users. Search for best-selling items in multiple categories and validate them through your TikTok Shop account.

5. Utilize Various Tools

Apart from the mentioned methods, tools like Shop Plus and other integrated tools can offer analytics and product-specific data to help with your research.

Steps for Product Validation

  1. Search Any Product on TikTok Market Place:

    • Check for price competition and sales volume (preferably 500+ units in the last 30 days).
  2. Find Suppliers:

    • If validated, source locally from Amazon, eBay, or direct wholesalers. Ensure the supplier's delivery time aligns with TikTok’s shipping requirements.
  3. Test and Trial:

    • Initially, list 100 products and observe their performance for a month. Then, optimize your listings based on sales data. Use the best-performing products for future scaling.
  4. Transition to White Label or Wholesale:

    • Once validated, consider white labeling or buying wholesale for higher margins.
