Scaling Past Uncertainty with This Winning Supply Chain Strategy (Shopify Dropshipping 2023)

Introduction

Everyone on their e-commerce drop shipping journey at some point becomes uncertain about what to do next when it comes to supply and logistics. Today, we're going to go through solutions for three different kinds of e-commerce entrepreneurs: those getting started, those getting consistent sales, and those scaling beyond to larger order volumes.

My name is Nile, and I've been a dropshipping agent in China for around three years now. I've also run my own e-commerce brands in the past. I've been on both sides of e-commerce, and hopefully, some of that experience will help some of you break through any sticking points that you may have.

Getting Started

AliExpress

If I were to start a new e-commerce or dropshipping store tomorrow, I would not use some of these methods, but they still benefit those who haven't started testing yet and are looking to find out if there's a product-market fit for their product. AliExpress is popular for new dropshippers because it has:

  1. Low barrier to entry
  2. Wide range of products
  3. Relatively cheap prices

However, AliExpress has its downsides, like slow shipping times and potential manual order fulfillment.

CJ Dropshipping

An alternative to AliExpress is CJ Dropshipping. These platforms are slightly more expensive but offer better shipping times and customer support. However, you might still deal with stock issues.

Alibaba Bulk Ordering

Another method is sourcing in bulk from Alibaba, and while it can work, it’s risky for beginners due to high upfront costs and inventory management.

Scaling and Consistency

Once you begin to see consistent sales, you’ll need a fulfillment method that supports this growth. Here are your options:

In-House Fulfillment

You can source from Alibaba, store them at home, and fulfill orders yourself. This saves money but takes time away from focus areas like marketing and growing the business.

Local 3PL

You could use a local 3PL service. Your supplier sends the bulk product directly to a local third-party logistics company that fulfills orders for you. This method costs more upfront but allows you to focus on growth. Managing inventory and cash flow is essential here.

Private Agent in China

A private agent in China can act like a 3PL but with lower lead times and diversified product sourcing. This method has slightly slower shipping than local 3PLs but offers flexibility and efficiency in inventory management.

High Order Volumes

For those scaling to high order volumes, the previous methods are still valid but need adjustment:

In-House Fulfillment Centers

Setting up in-house fulfillment centers in various countries is an option. This requires substantial resources and could be more complex than it's worth.

Multiple 3PLs

Using multiple 3PLs can improve shipping times but complicates inventory management and can tie up a lot of capital.

Hybrid Model

A hybrid model using both a private agent in China and local 3PLs offers a balanced approach, reducing inventory risks and ensuring fast shipping times.

Conclusion

Choosing the right fulfillment method significantly impacts your business’s scalability and customer satisfaction. Assess your current stage and make informed decisions to drive sustainable growth.
