TikTok now has over 1 billion users and has surpassed other social media apps in terms of downloads, especially during the pandemic. TikTok has also launched TikTok Shop in selected countries, providing a convenient and entertaining e-commerce approach even without a website. The last two quarters of 2022 generated millions of revenue for my business through TikTok ads paired with TikTok Shop.

So if you want to boost your business or your clients' businesses, make sure to follow this guide. Apply what you will learn and prepare to scale your business.

Getting Started

Before creating an account, understand the ad structure on TikTok. To begin, you're going to create a business account to access TikTok Business Center. Next, you'll create an ad account via the Ads Manager. Then, you'll create ad campaigns.

TikTok ads have similarities with Meta ads but differ in capabilities and terminologies. For instance, what Meta calls ad sets, TikTok refers to as ad groups.

Ad Formats

TikTok currently offers five ad formats:

  • Top View: Appears when you open the app.
  • Brand Takeover: Also appears when you open the app.
  • In-feed Ads: Show up while you're scrolling through the For You page.
  • Branded Hashtag Challenge
  • Branding Effect

Most small businesses utilize in-feed ads, while bigger brands may use the other formats.

Creating a TikTok Business Account

  1. Visit tiktok.com/business and click "Create Now".
  2. Choose to sign up via email or phone. For this guide, we'll use email.
  3. Enter your password, agree to the terms, and complete the verification steps.
  4. Fill in your country, industry, business name, and phone number, then click "Register".

Setting Up Your Business Center

  1. Provide details about your business like the business center name, time zone, and a short description of your business.
  2. Optionally, you can add billing information for manual or automatic payments.
  3. Once registered, you'll reach the TikTok Business Center dashboard where you can add users and partners.

Creating an Ad Account

  1. Navigate to the "Ad Accounts" section and click "Create".
  2. Fill in the required fields like account name, time zone, company name, and industry. For e-commerce businesses, select "E-commerce".
  3. Your ad account will undergo a review before activation.

Adding a TikTok Account

To maximize the effect of your ads, it's beneficial to link your TikTok account:

  1. From your Business Center, request access to your TikTok account by generating a QR code.
  2. Scan the QR code using your TikTok app and authorize the account.

Creating Your First Ad Campaign

  1. Within the Ads Manager, start by clicking "Create" and select from eight objectives (e.g., shop purchases, video views).
  2. After choosing an objective, set up the campaign name and budget.
  3. In the ad group level, configure your shop settings, set audience targeting, and budget.
  4. In the ad level, upload creatives or select an existing TikTok post (Spark Ads).
  5. Configure the call-to-action button and review your ad settings before submitting.

Tracking Campaign Performance

After running your campaign for at least 3-5 days, monitor performance via the dashboard. Use custom columns to track metrics such as CPM, Impressions, Clicks, CTR, and conversions.

Installing TikTok Pixel

To track website visitor activities:

  1. In Business Center, navigate to "Assets" -> "Event" -> "Web Events".
  2. Create a new pixel, name it, and copy the pixel code.
  3. Insert this code into the header section of your website.
  4. Use the TikTok Pixel Helper Chrome extension to verify the pixel installation.
